I was listening to Stereolab's Three Dee Melodie when I did this... it's the music's fault.
Dear Ms. Kari Gignac,
One of the highlights of June’s Luminato celebrations will be a photographic tribute to Toronto’s most artistic, creative and inspiring women – and we would be honoured if you would share your spirit and energy with this monumental artistic endeavor.
Conveying the precious bond among creative women in our vibrant city, this tribute entitled Toronto’s Mille Femmes, will bring together portraits of a thousand women from all artistic fields including art, architecture, dance, theatre, fashion, design, film, literature, journalism, and arts administration and producing. Co-produced by Luminato and Lancôme, Toronto’s Mille Femmes will capture the inner-beauty and unique personalities of the inspirational women who embody the passion, heritage and inspiration behind Toronto’s artistic community. Top arts “Creative Women” will be asked to recommend “Protégés” to participate in the tribute, creating a dynamic visual network united by passion, admiration, and creativity. In addition to the women themselves participating, this will result in a beautiful work composed of 1,000 portraits, to be presented together as an exhibition at Luminato 2008.
An exceptional project by famed French photographer Pierre Maraval, Toronto’s Mille Femmes is above all a unique technical performance which will be made possible thanks to the most current digital technology. All the portraits will be printed and progressively displayed in exhibition format inside Toronto’s Allen Lambert Galleria, Brookfield Place (formerly BCE Place) from June 9th to June 15th. This mosaic belongs to the series of MILLE (1,000), which Pierre Maraval describes as “Human Landscapes”. This network project, where each individual is considered in relation to the others, creates a force of contact and communication between participants as a special link is created between the Creative Woman and the Protégé. At the end of the project everyone is brought together in a mosaic of 1,000 faces. As the pinnacle of this masterpiece, all 1,000 inspiring women will be invited to join in a celebration of creativity at the exhibit’s vernissage private party during Luminato. A personal invitation will be sent to you for this private party after the photo shoot.
For every Protégé selected, Lancôme will make a donation to the Ontario College of Art & Design. We would be delighted if you would grace the Toronto’s Mille Femmes project with your involvement as a Creative Woman. If you agree, you will be asked to recommend candidates for Protégé invitations, in addition to participating in a 20 minute one-on-one photo shoot with Pierre Maraval in Toronto from March 24 – April 23. We will follow up with you in a few days to provide more details about this powerful artistic initiative. If you have any questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact Andrea Fung by phone at 416-294-0555 or by email at luminato2@ca.loreal.com.
We hope that you will join us in celebrating the vibrancy of our city, and in honouring all women who are a source of creativity and beauty in Toronto.
